Decorating a Birdhouse

Decorating a Birdhouse

Having a craft project to work on as a family is a great way to pass the time. It allows for something to be accomplished together and becomes a point of pride for all involved. This is especially important during the summer months when the kids are out of school and may be stir crazy for something to do.

Building and decorating a bird house is something that parents and kids can do together. It is relatively cheap and can provide hours of entertainment even after the project is completed. If your child is anything like me, they will love anything that can fly and by building a bird house it will help them to watch birds and may even challenge them to find out even more about the types of birds that frequent your backyard.

Building Your Birdhouse

Three are many different ways that you can go about building your bird house. If you want your kids to have some input, it is important for the design to remain simple. However, if building the bird house is simply for your own craft, there are many complicated and fascinating designs that can be followed. It all depends on what you are looking for from your birdhouse. Looking to impress the neighbors? There are designs that will make your own home look like a shack!

If you want your kids to be a part of the process it is very easy to make your birdhouse very simple. It is quite possible to use four or five pieces of wood and construct one with very little in the way of tools. This will allow your kids to claim ownership over the birdhouse from start to finish.

Painting Your Birdhouse

This is where your kids will have a blast! If you approached correctly, your kids will realize that this is actually a house for birds and they need to decorate it as they would their own house. Again, this will be a great exercise for kids to visualize and might spark a greater interest in birds and other animals. Although there are many ways to go about painting your birdhouse, one the best ways to go about doing this is to use a sponge brush. This will give you enough control to do what you want. Sponge brushes are also great for kids. They don't hold too much paint, but are still able to get the job done.

One thing to keep in mind is that the paint you use should not contain any chemicals that will have potential harm to the bird who will be visiting. Please take careful notice of the type of paint you are using. Not only could this be fatal to the birds, but it could also be traumatic to your kids.

Another thing to consider is to leave the inside of the birdhouse free of any paint. It should be completely natural and free of chemicals so that the birds can freely make a home inside.

How Bright Should My Birdhouse Be Painted?

Although it might be fun to paint your birdhouse a loud color that will stand out in your yard, and this might be your kid's color of choice, it is important to recognize that bright colors will not necessarily attract more birds. In the wild, female birds are a more subdued color for protection. This will often translate into where birds attempt to find shelter. If your birdhouse is too bright, it might not attract birds.

How to Attract More Birds to Your Backyard and Birdhouses

How to Attract More Birds to Your Backyard and Birdhouses

If you have already put up some birdhouses in your own backyard, you are probably wondering how you are going to attract and get more birds to come and visit your birdhouses. This article provides some ideas that you can easily implement to attract more birds to your backyard and your birdhouses.

First, as with humans, food is always a popular way to attract birds to your birdhouses and your backyard. You can provide different kinds of food to cater to different types of species of birds. Some of these food include nectars, small insects, fruits, nuts and seeds. In addition to these food sources, you should also always provide fresh water to the visiting birds. Bird baths and small ponds are some good ways to provide the visting birds with water.

The fastest way to a bird's heart is through its stomach. By providing food and water to the birds, you are performing bird feeding. Bird feeding is also a great way to observe different species of birds and their respective unique characteristics. Bird feeding is particularly important to birds because it provides them with a source of food and water during periods when food and water are scarce such as winter time. However, bird feeding can be done all year round as it supplements the visiting birds with their food needs. As such, its a great way to attract more birds to your birdhouses and backyard.

So how can you use this knowledge to attract more birds to your birdhouses and backyard ? For one, you can choose a safer spot in your backyard and set up a simple feeding station. The spot you choose should preferably be away from predators. You can take some precautionary measures to make the chosen spot safer like installing a ultrasonic cat deterrant and making sure there are no food near the spot so as to avoid attracting hungry animals. You can encourage birds to visit your feeding station by placing bird food in different areas around the feeding station. You can then vary the distance and shorten it as time goes by.

As mentioned, you don't have to build or buy an elaborated feeding station. The most important factor that your feeding station should have is the ease in which you can maintain it. It should be easy to refill, it should display the food prominently to birds, it should also hold a reasonable amount of food so you do not have to keep topping it up with food and finally it should be able to hold more then one bird at one time. Some of the simple feeding station you can consider buying would be the tube-feeder in which the seeds stay dry and its design prevents spillage of food or you can choose the hopper type of bird feeders which dispenses food automatically when they are needed.

As for water, it is essential if you want to attract more birds to your birdhouses. You should note that different species of birds have different requirements of how deep they like their water source to be. For example, some species of birds like small puddles while other birds like bird baths that are relatively deep. Providing various depths of water will attract different species of birds. However, do take note that your water depth should not be more then 2 inches deep as some birds may drown and do not choose a bird bath with an elaborated and striking pattern or design at the bottom of the bath as it may confuse the birds and discourage them from using the bird bath.

Besides all the points mentioned above, you should also keep in mind the number one factor that influences the attractiveness of your birdhouse to visiting birds. What's the number one factor that people always don't take note ? Its the safety of your birdhouses to the visiting birds. If you are attracting a certain kind of species of bird, customize the entrance opening hole of the birdhouse to suit just the species of bird you want to attract. Removable of birdhouse perches and the reduction of backyard predators also play a big part in making your birdhouse safer and more attractive to birds.

Attract Nesting Birds With The Right Type Of Birdhouse

Attract Nesting Birds With The Right Type Of Birdhouse

Birds add activity and color to your garden and what better way to enjoy them then to provide them with birdhouses where they can nest and raise their young. This adds a unique dimension to your outdoor living as you can watch the adults bring back food and anxiously await for the day when the little ones will fly off on their own.

But hanging a birdhouse in your yard has more value than just to entertain you. In modern times man has encroached on the native habitat of many nesting birds and some of these birds have nowhere to build their nests. In fact, some species have declined significantly since the 1950s due to man's zest to build strip malls and apartment buildings in the space where forests once stood.

The birds hardest hit by this are cavity nesting birds - birds which build their nests inside hollows or cavities. These are the birds that you can most help by hanging a birdhouse in your yard and include the Downey Woodpecker, the Chickadee, the Plain Titmouse, the House Wren, and the Red Breasted Nuthatch.

Depending on which type of bird you want to attract you want to hang your birdhouse at a different height. Believe it or not, birds a very particular about this. If you want to attract the Titmouse, Red Breasted Nuthatch or Downey Woodpecker then you want to be sure that the birdhouse is time between 5 and 15 feet high. The House Wren, on the other hand, doesn't like their nest to be quite so high and you want to keep that between 5 and 10 feet. The Chickadee, will go a little lower and you can hang his between 4 and 15 feet. Generally, if you hang the birdhouse between 5 and 10 feet in height you have a chance of attracting any one of these birds.

In addition to hanging one or more birdhouses, you can also attract birds into your yard by putting a bird feeder and a birdbath. Then they might happen across the birdhouse while they are feeding and think it's a great place to build a nest.

Birdhouses can be hung on trees and fences on poles or anywhere else so you can imagine. Typically, you want the birdhouse to be stable so the way most people hang them is to screw them from the back into a tree or other solid post. If you can get a birdhouse that comes on a metal pole that can be good for your birds because that makes it harder for squirrels and raccoons to get up into the baby birds. You want to keep the birdhouse away from your own house or other areas of activity since most birds will find it too busy to nest there.

Since birds start building a nest in the spring you want to make sure you have the house out well before they are looking for new accommodations. So plan to hang it around February or March so you can be ready for your new bird family.

If you are planning on using the birdhouse year after year, you want to clean it out after each nesting season. It's pretty easy to tell when the birds are done nesting as there will be no activity around the birdhouse. When baby birds are in there you will see the mother flying in with food quite frequently. If you think the nest is empty go over and tap on the box and if you hear nothing it's okay to take it down and clean out.

Don't use a harsh chemicals when cleaning your birdhouse, simply brush it out and maybe use water to wipe it down. Be sure it is dried out and store it away for the winter. Then, in the following February you can hang it up to get ready for the next years nesting season!

Individuals who desire the companionship of birds find fancy birdhouses inexpensive and fun to make. All unusual birdhouses should be durable, cool, rainproof and designed for easy access for cleaning.

The suitable material for birdhouses is metal. However, metal other than aluminum must be avoided as they can become extremely hot when the sun is high. The roof should be made with enough to shed water and should have a minimum 3-inch of overhang to shield the entrance from driving rain. As some water may penetrate into the house, a few small holes should be made in the floor to allow draining of water, and to manage proper ventilation in hot weather, holes should be made near the top of the box. It is also advisable for the house to be developed with screws for easy detaching for cleaning. To manage the young birds in climbing to the opening of your creative birdhouses, it is better to have the interior walls roughened or grooved.

Bear in mind to put your creative birdhouses in an area that is not accessible to their predators- like cat. It is much better to have iron poles placed as mounts for the birdhouse to protect the birds from cats and squirrels climbing to the birdhouse. As birds insist on territorial rights, it is better not to place creative birdhouses near to each other as conflicts may arise in empty birdhouses.

Once you are certain that pests can be eliminated and that the birdhouse is ideal for the birds, the only thing that is in need to be done is the cleaning of the interior of the house periodically. So go ahead and search for the creative birdhouse!

How to Select The Perfect Decorative Bird House Material for your Birdhouse

How to Select The Perfect Decorative Bird House Material for your Birdhouse

If you have gone to your local pet store, you would have discovered that there really are a lot of different decorative bird house designs made up of a similarly dizzyingly variety of materials ranging from metal to colorful plastics to wood. However, if you would like to build your own birdhouse instead of buying a ready-made one, the best material to choose to construct your birdhouse is wood because it is easy to cut, it has naturally attractive designs, it is weather-proof and most importantly it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb in the middle of your backyard.

Let's dwell a little on the properties of wood as a material for your decorative bird house construction.

First, wood has good insulating properties. Choose wood that is at least three quarter inches thick to maximize its insulation benefits so that your nesting birds will be nesting in a comfortable temperature in your birdhouse.

Second, although wood is naturally durable, some woods are better then others at resisting decay. Since your birdhouse will be going through rain and shine everyday, you should pick a wood that is more decay resistant so that it will be longer lasting. Ideal material choices for wooden bird house will be cedar, redwood or bald cypress.

If you have an existing birdhouse that is made up of pine or plywood, you can coat it with a water-based exterior latex paint. Be sure to only coat the exterior of the birdhouse and not the interior or the birdhouse entrance. Usually, coating the exterior with a dull, earth-tone color will be sufficient to keep the boards from rotting.

Why do we recommend painting the birdhouse exterior with a dull, earth-tone color ? Well, a earth-tone color will not absorb heat as much as a darker or more striking color. Different colors absorbs different amounts of heat. Darker colors tend to absorb more heat and as a result, it becomes warmer. Light, earth-tone colors reflect more light and so the surface feels cooler. Another reason why we recommend painting your birdhouse a dull, earth-tone color because it is less likely to attract predators to your birdhouse.

Regardless of the colors that you chose for your birdhouse, you should never use paints that contain lead or use any harmful chemicals like varnish on the wood surfaces of the birdhouse. Wood surfaces, due to their inherent properties, will tend to break down and chip off after being exposed to the natural weather elements. If the birds accidentally ingest one of the wood chips that is covered with toxic paints or have been treated with harmful chemicals, the bird may die of poisoning. If you do need to treat the wood, use non-petroleum based, naturally occuring oils like linseed oil. Petroleum based liquids tend to stick on the bird's feathers, causing them to be wet and sticky and as a result, it will make it very difficult for the birds to make a quick escape when a predator is near.

Next, to put everything together, you can either glue the wood pieces together or you can nail them together. If you want the birdhouse to last longer, glue the wood pieces first then nail them. However, one thing to note is that, none of your nails should not be sticking out. Nails exposed to the rain will gradually become rusty. When birds accidentally cut themselves on the exposed nail, it will be seriously injured. Moreover, when humans accidentally get cut by the nails, they may also get an infection from the rust.

For the interior of the birdhouse, you should consider placing some rough sawn wood to act as a "ladder" to make it easier for the nesting birds to get in and out of your birdhouse. Most birdhouse are quite small in size and since wood has a smooth texture, sometimes it is hard for the birds to get out of the birdhouse. You can also consider making small notches on the inside of the front face of the birdhouse which can also make the birdhouse more bird-friendly.

Keeping Predators away from your Birdhouse

Keeping Predators away from your Birdhouse

Every living thing in this planet of Earth is part of the ecology. In this biodiversity of species of plants and animals, nature will have formed its unique food chains for each of these species. Every species of plants and animals will have another kind of species that feeds on it. This, of course, will also happen to the visiting birds that have chosen to nest in our birdhouses. Some people have placed their own decorative birdhouses in their own backyard and discovered that after a while, squirrels, raccoons and cats started coming into their backyard, with their eyes of course staring straight at the decorative birdhouses and no, they aren't interested in your nice cute birdhouse design.

Are there any steps we can take to prevent predators from preying on the nesting birds in our birdhouses ? In this article, we explore some of the ways we can implement to prevent or minimize attacks on your birdhouses and make it safer and more attractive for visiting birds to nest in your birdhouse.

BirdHouse Entrance Size

Different kind of decorative birdhouses have different birdhouse entrance opening sizes. Besides selecting a birdhouse based on its exterior designs, you should also choose a birdhouse that have a birdhouse entrance size about the size of the species of birds which you want to attract to your birdhouse. This is important because the birdhouse entrance size should only allow the birds to go in and out of your birdhouse and it should keep out bigger predators from entering your birdhouse. If the birdhouse entrance size is too big, you will attract bigger predators like cats who may attack the birds inside the birdhouse and will harm young baby birds or bird eggs. To select a perfect birdhouse entrance size will require you to have some knowledge on the species of birds you want to attract in your birdhouse. This information should be readily available in your local library or you can consult your local pet shop if you are unsure.

What if you have an existing birdhouse and its entrance hole size is too big ? You could reduce the entrance hole size by glueing or nailing an additional piece of wood at the entrance hole.

Birdhouse Perches

Some decorative birdhouse designs have perches in front of the birdhouse or around the birdhouse to beautify its overall design and make it look like a real house. Birds do not use the perches and do not need them to get in and out of the birdhouse. On the contrary, perches may be used by predators to get to the birds in the birdhouse. They can hop onto the perch and in result, have access to the interiors of the birdhouse.

If you have an existing birdhouse that have perches on them, you may remove them to make your birdhouses safer to visiting birds.

Safe Mounting Options For Birdhouses

Most people will mount their birdhouses on branches of trees. The problem with this type of mounting is that cats or raccoons can climb the tree and have access to the birdhouse. An alternative to this method is to place your wooden birdhouses on metal or PVC poles. These poles however, will usually not be found in a typical pet store. They can instead be found at your local hardware store. Before going to the hardware store to get the poles, you may want to select a good new position to place your birdhouse. The new position should preferably be located away from places where the predator can climb on and jump onto the birdhouse. You will also need to measure how high you want to place the birdhouse. Head over to the hardware store and ask them to cut a metal or PVC pole to your desired height.

Some people apply slippery grease to the poles to make it more difficult for animals to climb the poles, however, take note that if you do this, you should only apply non-petroleum based products and only apply it at the base of the pole because when escaping birds come into contact with petroleum based products accidentally, their feathers get wet and sticky making it very hard for them to fly away for a quick escape when attacked.

Keep clean around the birdhouses

Some backyards are literally littered with food. Left over barbecue utensils and rubbish, pet foods all over the backyard are some of the examples of leaving food open which attracts animals to your backyard. To prevent this, clean and keep all left over backyard barbecue equipments and keep pet foods inside the house so as not to attract animals to your backyard. Cleaning left over rubbish which contains meats also prevent attracting larger meat eating birds to your backyard.

All these factors will make your birdhouse in your backyard be safer to visiting birds.

New birdhouses, when will the birds move in?

I just recently built 3 bird houses and painted them key west style, they are very ornate, colorful, and fairly large. We have an acre in the backyard so I was wondering if hanging these will attract more birds, and if so, when will they move in? We are anxious to find out and hoping they don't just look for a place to nest when they are ready to have eggs
